CHURCH PLANTING
SOUTH OF 66 N LONGITUDINAL LINE
Join us as we prepare for God to Work!
We at the Iceland Project and many of our partners have been praying for years that God would prepare the way to plant a Gospel preaching church in Akureyri, Iceland.
Akureyri is situated in the seat of a fjord just south of the 66 degree North longitudinal line, it's the capital of the northern region of Iceland and with approximentely 18,000 people it is the biggest city in Iceland outside the capital area.
While we wait with anticipation for God to prepare a church planter to work in Akureyri, we want to be prepared to support that church planter, so we are looking for supporters to join our 66N initiative. Starting today, June 6th (6/6), we are striving to raise $66,000 in 66 days for the future church plant.
WHY ICELAND?
Iceland is getting a lot of attention these days as tourism continues to grow. The beautiful landscapes are breathtaking, but they hide a spiritual wasteland. The presence of the Lutheran State Church would lead one to believe that Iceland has been reached by the gospel, but that is no longer the case and what now remains is a mission field in desperate need of labourers.β
Like much of Scandinavia and Europe in general, Iceland is usually overlooked by churches and mission organisations when looking to invest and engage in gospel missions. If you donβt research deep enough, youβll likely get the idea that Iceland is almost 85 percent Christian, and move on to seek other people groups who need to be reached with the gospel. The reality is that Iceland is quite possibly the most godless country in all of Europe.
